The sphere of biotechnologies is slowly but steadily growing. Thus, the market share of this segment has increased by 2.2% since 2012. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics decided to analyze what specialists in the sphere of biotechnologies will be required in the nearest future. The list of main professions is provided below.  

Top 5 specialists in the sphere of biotechnologies that will be popular in 8 years:

1. Genetic counselor

Such specialists study DNA tests to reveal whether there are risks of genetic diseases transmission. Professionals in this sphere are required in hospitals to consult physicians and patients. Analysts predict that genetic counselors will be in greater demand than today (29% more frequently sought for). 

2. Biomedical engineer

These experts focus mainly on the production of medical instruments and devices, some of them are engaged in biomedical research, and some work in pharmaceutical companies. In 8 years, the demand for biomedical engineers will increase by 23%.

3. Medical technologist and medical technician

Medical technologists and technicians perform various testing. The majority of specialists of this profile work in ordinary hospitals, but some of them work in diagnostic centers. The demand for medical technologists and technicians will increase by 16% by 2024.

4. Medical research scientist

Researchers of tumor diseases, neurobiologists, toxicologists and other research scientists fall into this category. The majority of these specialists work at universities, in hospitals, and only 3% are engaged in medical researches. The number of such positions will increase by 8% over the period of 10 years.

5. Biochemist and biophysicist

 Scientists, that study vital processes of organisms, are usually involved in scientific researches and work at universities, and less frequently work in pharmaceutical companies. We will need 8% more of such specialists in 2024.

Besides that, in 2024 the demand for good epidemiologists will increase by 6%, biological technicians – by 5%, microbiologists, zoologists and zoo biologists – by 4%, and chemical technologists – by 2%.
