Review of the new professional 3D printer Ultimaker 3

Ultimaker 3 has been already called a game-changing solution that can revolutionize the world of additive technologies. Ultimaker’s authorized representatives in Ukraine – Extrusion in Motion – are more modest about their latest development, although they do not conceal: the new FDM device has a wide range of functions and makes professional 3D printing available for ordinary users.

Developers factored in the feedbacks from customers regarding earlier versions, corrected deficiencies, and tried to make all possible to maximally improve the users’ experience. The results are evident: Ultimaker 3 has become a kind of technological breakthrough in the world of additive technologies.

The newest 3D model from Ultimaker was presented to the world not so long ago – on October 18. Company’s authorized representative in Ukraine, Oleg Kireev, highlighted all technical characteristics of Ultimaker 3, as well as subtleties of work with this model.

Primarily, Ultimaker 3 is a professional printer intended for creation of complex objects using the technology of covering the carcass with water-soluble nylon material, after the hardening of which the product is placed in water, and the primary carcass is removed.

The newest 3D model from Ultimaker was presented to the world not so long ago – on October 18. Company’s authorized representative in Ukraine, Oleg Kireev, highlighted all technical characteristics of Ultimaker 3, as well as subtleties of work with this model.

Primarily, Ultimaker 3 is a professional printer intended for creation of complex objects using the technology of covering the carcass with water-soluble nylon material, after the hardening of which the product is placed in water, and the primary carcass is removed.

Technical characteristics of Ultimaker 3:

  • system made of two smart extruders;
  • possibility to print two different expandable materials simultaneously;
  • automatic bed levelling, which excludes mistakes when calibrating;
  • NFC technology that provides smart registration of materials;
  • support of polymer fibers – ABS, PLA, HIPS plastics, flexible materials, for example rubber and FLEX, Watson, nylon, polycarbonate;
  • printing fidelity – 20 micron;
  • availability of indicators that show the nozzle temperature;
  • embedded camera that provides control over the printing process;
  • adding and transferring files using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB and NFC.

The ordinary version of the new model can create 215х215х200 mm objects using one extruder, and several extruders can create objects with maximum sizes of 197х215х200 mm. The advanced version, Ultimaker 3 Extended, features a bigger camera that provides a possibility to print 197х215х300 mm models.

Oleg Kireev, who presented this new product, told that future owners of Ultimaker 3 will gain more freedom in design, which was earlier available only for users of professional expensive equipment. New 3D printer has a reliable construction, functional software, and allows thoroughly adjusting the printing process and maintaining control during the production. In fact, Ultimaker 3 makes seamless professional 3D printing experience with minimum maintenance requirements available for ordinary users.

By the way, the design of Ultimaker 3 in some way resembles Apple products. It is not a coincidence, as these two companies collaborate, and you will see Ultimaker’s products in any Apple Store.

Application areas of the new FDM device from the well-known Dutch company include architecture, design, advertising, medicine, education, machinery, prototyping. This device will excellently suit for the development of small and medium business.

Technical characteristics of Ultimaker 3 show that it can work with a wide range of various materials. Interestingly, the end product will resemble the material, the dust of which was added to the polymer, in terms of characteristics and texture. In particular, Ultimaker 3 allows producing goods with bamboo texture, interesting items from bronze, etc. According to Extrusion in Motion, new printer is often used by design studios for creation of different art objects and installations.
