Director of 3D Print Conference Kiev has made a presentation at the annual All-Ukrainian seminar held by the National Bank of Ukraine

Director of the project 3D Print Conference Kiev, Mares Shamzhi has spoken at the annual All-Ukrainian seminar held by the National Bank of Ukraine, devoted to the theme “Investigation of doubtful notes (coins) of national currency”. Specialist on additive technologies has presented his “Review of modern 3D printing technologies”.

Speaker shared the subtleties of 3D printing and scanning with banking sector specialists, paid special attention to interaction between additive technologies and banking structures, and told how false-coiners use 3D printing methods.

According to Mares Shamzhi, today 3D printing and scanning industry is considered to be one of the most promising in the world. Additive technologies are applied in medicine, building industry, automotive and aircraft industry, education, film industry, for production of weapon, food and various goods. Ukraine also keeps abreast with world trends. For example, PrivatBank refused from buying expensive component parts for ATMs, and began using 3D printers in order to produce them.

But the potential of additive manufacturing was appreciated not only by official entities, but by fraudsters as well. They started to use 3D printing to make duplicates of old coins. And although collectors claim that the quality of printed forgeries is rather low, the amount of deceived numismatists is rather high.

In the course of presentation additive technologies specialist used real cases to prove that 3D printed fake coins constitute a real danger to world economy, as far as false-coiners produce not only old collectors’ coins, but current coins as well. For instance, two years ago European police has warned people about circulation of fake pounds, printed by Chinese fraudsters. There are also euro coins circulating in Europe, manufactured with the help of 3D printer. If you don’t examine them closely, it will be hard to differentiate them from real ones.

According to the expert, in order to print a dollar coin, one will have to spend $ 0.04 on expendable materials. Thus, false-coiners can use innovations for cheating. And currently it is impossible to track the device, which was used for printing money. 

In the end of his presentation speaker told that for several years Ukraine has been hosting a large-scale conference, devoted to 3D printing and scanning, – 3D Print Conference Kiev.  Event organizer, Smile-Expo, always amazes participants and guests of the event with unique 3D printed items, some of which were listed in the Book of Records of Ukraine. The third international conference 3D Print Conference Kiev will take place in NSC Olimpiyskiy on 16 September 2016.
