Researchers from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the startup Momentum patented unique development –3D printing of magnets from recycled materials.
Last year scientists from ORNL found out that 3D printed magnets are better than their traditional equivalents made though injection molding. Besides, they are created virtually without waste and don’t need additional processing. With the help of this development United States Department of Energy launched additive manufacturing of isotropic magnets with neodymium, iron and boron.
Researchers from ORNL decided to carry on studies and make production more environmentally friendly. They cooperated with the Dallas-based startup Momentum to use the technology of recycling rare earth elements from electronic waste which is perfect for 3D printing of high quality magnets.
Inventors can use waste to print powerful magnets for different purposes: production of cars, turbines, engines, generators, high-speed rail transit, etc.
